Short answer: The main, proven effect of underarm laser hair removal is a lasting reduction in hair. There is no strong evidence that it reduces sweating; laser hair removal is not a treatment for sweating. Odour may improve indirectly: with less hair there is less surface for sweat and bacteria to cling to, so the area stays clean more easily. The effect on darkening is also indirect: when irritation from constant shaving, waxing and ingrown hairs goes down, some people find the darker look fades. Laser does not lighten the skin.
Why Are Underarms One of the Most Popular Areas?
The underarm is small, sessions are quick, and the hair is usually dark and coarse, so it responds well to laser. It is also one of the areas most irritated by waxing and shaving. That is why many people choose the underarms as their first laser area.
Sweat: Does Laser Affect the Sweat Glands?
This is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is: laser hair removal is not a sweating treatment. Laser targets the pigment in the hair; sweat glands carry no pigment and are a different structure. There are small studies and personal reports of changes in sweating after laser, but it would be wrong to promise this as a general result.
Part of the “I sweat less” feeling comes from having less hair: hair holds sweat and keeps the area feeling damp for longer. With less hair, sweat dries faster and the area feels fresher. If you have excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), you should see a dermatologist.
Odour: An Indirect but Real Benefit
Sweat itself is odourless; odour forms when sweat meets skin bacteria. Underarm hair provides extra surface for sweat and bacteria. With less hair:
- The area is easier to wash and dry,
- Deodorants and antiperspirants make better contact with the skin,
- Many people notice odour is less noticeable during the day.
The effect varies from person to person, and diet, clothing fabrics and hygiene habits also affect odour.
Darkening: Does Laser Lighten Underarms?
Dark underarms can have several causes:
| Cause | Possible effect of laser |
|---|---|
| Dark hair roots visible under the skin (“shadow”) | The shadow fades noticeably as hair is reduced. |
| Irritation from frequent shaving and waxing | Less need to shave means less irritation; darkening may fade over time. |
| Ingrown hairs and post-inflammatory marks | Fewer ingrown hairs can mean fewer new marks. |
| Friction, tight clothing, some deodorants | No direct effect. |
| Hormonal or metabolic causes | No effect; a medical assessment is needed. |
In short, laser can indirectly help with the part of the darkening that comes from hair and irritation, but it is not a pigmentation treatment. If the darker skin also feels velvety, keep in mind this can be a hormonal or metabolic sign and see a doctor.
Sessions and Timing for Underarms
- Session length: it is a small area, so sessions are short and can fit into a lunch break.
- Interval: usually 5–8 weeks.
- Number of sessions: 6–8 is a common range for most people.
- Sensation: because hair is dense, early sessions can feel sharper; the cooled handpiece eases this. Details: does laser hair removal hurt.
Underarm-Specific Tips Before and After
- Shave 12–24 hours before your session; do not wax or tweeze.
- Come without deodorant, perfume or cream on the day.
- For 24 hours after the session, avoid alcohol-based or scented deodorants, hot showers, saunas and intense exercise.
- Do not pull out shedding hairs between sessions. We explain why hair sheds 1–3 weeks later in shedding after laser hair removal.
Differences Between Women and Men
Men's underarm hair is usually denser and coarser, and settings and the session plan are adjusted for that. Many men prefer thinning the hair rather than removing it completely; telling us at the start changes the plan. For area-specific information see underarm laser hair removal (women) and underarm laser hair removal (men).
Proven or Overstated? Summary
- Proven: lasting hair reduction, less shaving, fewer ingrown hairs.
- Indirect benefit: less noticeable odour, less hair shadow and less irritation-related darkening.
- Should not be promised: treating sweating, “whitening” the skin, clearing hormonal darkening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
Does underarm laser reduce sweating?
There is no strong evidence for this; laser hair removal is not a sweating treatment. With less hair the area dries faster and can feel fresher.
Does laser reduce underarm odour?
It can, indirectly. With less hair there is less surface for sweat and bacteria, so the area stays clean more easily.
Will laser clear dark underarms?
Laser is not a pigmentation treatment. Hair shadow and irritation-related darkening may fade over time; hormonal darkening needs a medical assessment.
How many sessions does underarm laser take?
6–8 sessions is a common range for most people, usually 5–8 weeks apart.
Can I use deodorant after a session?
We recommend avoiding alcohol-based or scented deodorants for the first 24 hours, and coming without deodorant on the day.
Is underarm laser different for men?
Men's hair is usually denser and coarser, and settings are adjusted accordingly. If you want thinning rather than full removal, say so at the start.
