Why Is Hair Still Coming Out After Laser? The Shedding Phase
Short answer: Yes, it is normal. Hair does not vanish straight after a laser session. Treated hairs are usually pushed towards the surface and shed on their own within 1–3 weeks. During this time the hair can look as if it is “growing”; in fact most of it is hair that has detached from the root working its way out. And because hairs that were resting during the session were not affected, seeing new hairs a few weeks later is also expected. Those are the target of your next session.
The First 3 Weeks After a Session
| When | What you usually see |
|---|---|
| First 24–48 hours | Mild redness, small bumps around the follicles, a warm feeling. Usually settles quickly. |
| Week 1 | The hair still seems to be there and may even look slightly longer. |
| Weeks 1–3 | Shedding phase: treated hairs reach the surface and come away in the shower or when you towel off. Patchy “gaps” start to appear. |
| After week 3 | Hairs that were resting during the session start to grow. They are targeted at the next session. |
Why Does It Feel Like the Laser Did Not Work?
This is the worry we hear most after a first session. There are three reasons:
- Shedding is not instant: laser affects the follicle but does not destroy the hair shaft on the spot. It takes time for a detached hair to reach the surface and fall out.
- Not all hair is in the same phase: only hair in the active growth phase is effectively targeted at a session. Resting hairs appear a few weeks later and look like “new hair”. We explain this in our hair growth cycle article.
- Hair is dense in early sessions: at first, the reduction is hard to see. The difference usually becomes clear after the 2nd or 3rd session.
Dos and Don'ts During Shedding
Do
- After the first 24 hours, take a lukewarm shower and wash the area gently.
- A few days after the session, once any sensitivity has passed, light exfoliation with a soft mitt can help hairs shed.
- Keep your skin moisturised and use a high-SPF sunscreen if you will be in the sun.
- Shave if the hair bothers you.
Don't
- Do not tweeze: hairs that are shedding do not need pulling, and pulling resting hairs removes the target of your next session.
- Do not wax or epilate: for the same reason, shaving is the only method allowed during a laser course.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, hammams and intense exercise for the first 24 hours.
- Do not scrub red or sensitive skin hard.
When Is the Next Session?
The end of shedding does not mean it is time for the next session. Intervals follow the hair cycle: usually 4–6 weeks for the face, 5–8 weeks for underarms and bikini, and 6–10 weeks for arms, legs and back. In between, keep shaving any new hair.
When Should You Ask Us?
The following are not part of normal shedding. If you notice them, let us know and see a doctor if needed:
- Marked redness, swelling or pain lasting more than a few days,
- Blistering, crusting or changes in skin colour,
- Inflamed, spot-like lesions.
Also talk to us if you see no reduction at all after several sessions. Very light hair or hormonally driven hair growth can affect results; we may need to adjust the settings or suggest a medical assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
When does hair fall out after laser?
Usually within 1–3 weeks of the session. Treated hairs are pushed to the surface and shed on their own.
Is it normal for hair to look longer after a session?
Yes. Hairs that have detached from the root move towards the surface before shedding, which can look like growth.
Can I tweeze out shedding hairs?
No. Leave shedding hairs alone; pulling resting hairs removes the target of your next session.
New hairs appeared a few weeks later. Did the laser fail?
This is expected. Hairs that were resting during the session are not affected and appear later; they are targeted at the next session.
Can I shave during the shedding phase?
Yes, you can shave. Shaving is the only method allowed during a laser course.
