Morning puffiness around the face and eyes, jaw or forehead tightness from daily stress and clenching, or a tired, dull-looking complexion often respond well to gentle, rhythmic facial work. Rooted in traditional East Asian care rituals, Gua Sha massage uses smooth, contoured jade or rose quartz stones across the face and neck. At our salon in Şişli, we perform Gua Sha massage with facial oils and serums matched to your skin type, either as a standalone relaxing ritual or alongside a facial treatment.

What Is Gua Sha Massage and How Is It Done?

In facial Gua Sha, a smooth-edged natural stone is held at a low angle against cleansed skin prepared with a facial oil or serum and glided with light, steady pressure. Strokes move outward from the centre of the face and down along the sides of the neck, helping ease the look of fluid puffiness while releasing built-up tension in the jaw, cheek and forehead muscles.

Jade offers a naturally cool, soothing touch, while rose quartz glides smoothly over delicate areas. To learn more about how this ritual supports the skin, read our guide to the benefits of Gua Sha massage.

What Is It Used For?

  • Facial and under-eye puffiness: helping soften the look of morning fluid retention along the cheeks, jawline and eye contour.
  • Jaw, cheek and forehead tension: easing tightness in the masseter (jaw), temples and brow area linked to stress or clenching.
  • Tired, dull-looking skin: supporting a fresher, more rested and radiant-looking complexion through gentle massage strokes.
  • Neck and shoulder comfort: relaxing tightness along the neck and upper shoulders after long hours at a desk.
  • Combined facial care: adding a soothing massage step to professional skin care or eye contour care sessions.

For fine lines and tiredness around the eyes, Gua Sha pairs well with eye contour care; for deep cleansing and hydration, explore our skin care treatments.

How a Session Works

  1. Skin check and cleansing: we check your skin type and sensitivities, then gently remove makeup and surface impurities.
  2. Serum and facial oil: a skin-matched oil or serum is applied so the stone glides smoothly without pulling the skin.
  3. Gua Sha massage: using jade or rose quartz stones, we work across the neck, jawline, cheekbones, eye contour and forehead for 20–30 minutes with upward and outward strokes.
  4. Moisturising and protection: excess oil is balanced and the session finishes with moisturiser and daytime sunscreen.

Who Is It Not Suitable For?

Gua Sha massage is not performed over active, inflamed acne, open wounds, cold sores (herpes), active eczema or rosacea flare-ups, or recent sunburn. If you have had Botox, dermal fillers, thread lifts, mesotherapy or an intensive chemical peel in the facial area within the last 2–4 weeks, please consult your doctor first and wait until the recommended recovery period is complete.

After Your Session and Day to Day

  • A mild, healthy pinkness right after the massage is normal and settles quickly.
  • Drink plenty of water on the day of your session.
  • Continue using daily moisturiser and sunscreen.
  • If you clench your jaw or hold tension in your neck at work, regular sessions can help maintain that relaxed feeling.

  2. Gua Sha strokes

The stone moves upward and outward along the facial contours with light pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content

What does Gua Sha massage do?

Using gentle strokes with natural jade or rose quartz stones across the face and neck, it helps soften the look of facial puffiness, ease tightness in the jaw and forehead muscles, and leave the skin looking fresher and more rested.

Which stones are used in Gua Sha massage?

At our salon we use smooth, contoured natural jade and rose quartz Gua Sha stones shaped to fit the curves of the face and neck.

Does Gua Sha massage hurt or leave the face red?

No. Facial Gua Sha is performed with light-to-moderate pressure over facial oil without pulling the skin. Mild pinkness after the session is normal and fades quickly.

Does Gua Sha massage help with facial puffiness?

Yes. Rhythmic outward and downward strokes along the face and neck help reduce the look of fluid puffiness, especially around the cheeks, jawline and under-eye area.

Can I have Gua Sha massage after Botox or fillers?

Facial massage is not recommended during the first 2–4 weeks after Botox, dermal fillers or thread lifts; always check with the doctor who performed your procedure first.

Can Gua Sha be done on acne-prone skin?

No. To avoid irritating the skin or spreading inflammation, Gua Sha is not performed over active, inflamed acne breakouts.

How often can I have Gua Sha massage?

Depending on your needs, it can be scheduled once a week as a relaxing course or added to your monthly facial care sessions.
