Under-Eye Bags and Puffiness: Causes and Professional Care
Contents
Short answer: under-eye puffiness and bags come in two kinds. Swelling that's worse in the morning and eases through the day is usually fluid (oedema), made worse by poor sleep, salty food, alcohol, allergies or crying. Bags that stay the same all day come from tissues around the eye loosening with age and fat pads becoming more prominent. Temporary puffiness often responds to home measures and eye-area care; structural bags can only be softened with care.
Why Does the Under-Eye Area Swell?
The skin around the eyes is very thin and the loose tissue beneath holds fluid easily. Lying flat overnight makes fluid collect there. The most common causes of morning puffiness:
- Too little or irregular sleep,
- Salty and processed food, which makes the body hold water,
- Alcohol, which disrupts fluid balance,
- Allergies, plus rubbing and itching the eyes,
- Crying and eye strain,
- Hormonal phases, such as fluid retention before a period.
Temporary Puffiness or Structural Bags?
| Feature | Temporary puffiness (oedema) | Structural bags |
|---|---|---|
| When it shows | Mornings, easing during the day | The same all day |
| Cause | Fluid build-up, lifestyle, allergies | Tissue laxity, prominent fat pads, genetics |
| Response to care | Usually good | Appearance can be softened; structure doesn't change |
Reducing Puffiness at Home
- Sleep: aim for 7–8 hours and keep your head slightly raised.
- Less salt, more water: limit salty, processed food in the evening.
- Cold: a clean chilled spoon or cold compress for a few minutes. Never put ice directly on the skin.
- Don't rub your eyes, especially during allergy season.
- Gentle massage: very light strokes with your ring finger from under the eye towards the temples support fluid flow.
- Sunscreen and eye cream protect and hydrate the thin skin.
General ways to reduce water retention are covered in how to reduce water retention.
Professional Care at the Salon
Eye contour care
Using products suited to the delicate eye area, this treatment supports hydration and freshness to reduce a tired look. See eye contour care.
Genosys EyeCell
A protocol with eye-specific cosmetic ingredients that helps lighten the look of dark circles and puffiness and makes the area look brighter and more rested. See Genosys EyeCell.
Is lymphatic drainage applied to the face?
At our salon lymphatic drainage is done with a device and an air-pressure garment (suit) on the body, not by hand, and it is not applied to the face. So we do not plan lymphatic drainage for under-eye puffiness. For fluid-related bloating and heaviness in the body, see lymphatic drainage massage and what is lymphatic drainage.
Gua Sha
Gua Sha massage, following the lines of the face, also supports a more rested look under the eyes. See Gua Sha massage.
Don't Confuse Bags with Dark Circles
Dark circles and bags often appear together but are different. Dark circles relate to visible vessels under thin skin, pigmentation or shadowing. As puffiness goes down, shadows lessen, but pigment-related darkness needs its own care plan. For fine lines at the corners, see crow's feet.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if swelling affects one eye only, is painful, red or itchy, doesn't settle within a few days, or comes with swollen ankles, weight gain or fatigue. Puffiness around the eyes can sometimes signal allergy, infection, thyroid or kidney problems. For structural bags, surgery and injections are medical procedures and are not offered at our salon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
What causes under-eye puffiness?
Most often poor sleep, salty food, alcohol, allergies and crying; fluid collects around the eyes overnight.
Are under-eye bags the same as puffiness?
No. Puffiness that's worse in the morning is fluid; bags that stay all day relate to tissue laxity.
How can I reduce puffiness at home?
Enough sleep, less salt in the evening, a cold compress and very light massage from under the eye towards the temples all help.
Does lymphatic drainage help under-eye puffiness?
Lymphatic drainage at our salon is done on the body with an air-pressure garment and is not applied to the face. For temporary under-eye puffiness, enough sleep, less salt in the evening and a cold compress help.
Can treatments remove structural bags?
Care can soften their look but doesn't change the structure. Surgery and injections are medical procedures.
When should I see a doctor?
If swelling is in one eye, painful or red, doesn't settle in a few days or comes with swollen ankles, see a doctor.
