How to Reduce Water Retention: Lymphatic Drainage, Movement and Diet
Contents
Short answer: most of the everyday swelling people notice (water retention, bloating) comes from temporary causes: too much salt, not enough water, sitting or standing for long periods, hot weather and the menstrual cycle. Drinking enough water, cutting down on salt, moving regularly through the day, raising your legs and lymphatic drainage massage all help. But swelling that starts suddenly, affects one leg, is painful or comes with breathlessness can signal a health problem and should always be checked by a doctor.
What Causes Water Retention?
- Too much salt (sodium): the body holds water to balance it. Ready meals, processed meats and packaged snacks are the main sources.
- Not drinking enough: it sounds backwards, but too little water can make the body hold on to fluid.
- Inactivity: long hours at a desk or on your feet let fluid pool in the legs.
- Heat and long journeys: blood vessels widen and ankles swell.
- Hormonal cycles: water retention rises before a period and during pregnancy.
- Poor sleep and alcohol: they show up as morning puffiness in the face and under the eyes.
Eight Daily Steps to Reduce It
- Spread your water intake through the day rather than drinking a lot at once.
- Cut back on salt: do not add salt at the table and check labels on packaged food.
- Eat potassium-rich foods: bananas, avocado, leafy greens and pulses help fluid balance (ask your doctor first if you have kidney problems).
- Move for five minutes every hour: if you work at a desk, stand up, walk and circle your ankles.
- Raise your legs: for 15–20 minutes in the evening, above heart level.
- Walk regularly: contracting calf muscles helps push fluid upwards.
- Look after your sleep: regular sleep reduces morning puffiness.
- Limit alcohol and salty late-night meals.
How Lymphatic Drainage Massage Helps
The lymphatic system collects fluid that builds up between tissues and returns it to circulation. It has no pump like the heart; it relies on muscle movement and pressure changes. At our salon lymphatic drainage massage is done with a device and an air-pressure garment (suit), not by hand; rhythmic pressure waves moving in the direction of lymph flow support that flow. Many people feel lighter legs and a less bloated tummy after a session.
For tummy bloating specifically, read our guide to abdominal lymphatic drainage massage.
Water Retention or Fat?
| Water retention | Localised fat | |
|---|---|---|
| Changes | Rises and falls during the day and cycle | Stays the same day to day |
| Press with a finger | May leave a slight dent | No dent |
| Evening vs morning | Worse in the evening, better by morning (legs) | No difference |
| Supportive treatment | Lymphatic drainage, movement | G5, EMS |
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor first, rather than booking a salon treatment, if you have:
- Sudden, painful, red or warm swelling in one leg,
- Swelling with breathlessness, chest pain or unusual tiredness,
- Puffiness of the eyelids and face that does not go away,
- A sudden increase in swelling during pregnancy,
- Increasing swelling with a known heart, kidney, liver or thyroid condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
How much water should I drink to reduce water retention?
As a general guide, 2–2.5 litres spread across the day is enough. You need more in hot weather and on training days; if you have a heart or kidney condition, agree the amount with your doctor.
Does lymphatic drainage massage reduce swelling?
For everyday water retention it supports lymph flow and helps you feel lighter. Swelling linked to a medical condition needs a doctor's assessment first.
When is swelling dangerous?
Sudden, painful swelling in one leg, swelling with breathlessness or chest pain, and a sudden increase in swelling during pregnancy should be checked by a doctor without delay.
How can I tell water retention from fat?
Water retention rises and falls during the day and cycle and may leave a slight dent when pressed. Fat stays the same from day to day.
