Salon Facials vs Medical Skin Treatments: What's the Difference?
Contents
Short answer: classic facials and device-assisted professional salon facials are needle-free beauty treatments that work on the skin's surface, aimed at cleansing, hydration, radiance and regular care. Medical procedures — such as needle-based treatments, laser for pigmentation, deep peels, fillers and botox — act on deeper layers of the skin and must be performed by a doctor. Renew & Revive is a beauty salon; medical procedures are not offered here.
Three Concepts, Three Different Areas
| Classic facial | Professional salon facial | Medical procedure | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who performs it? | Beauty therapist | Beauty therapist | Doctor (usually a dermatologist) |
| Where? | Beauty salon | Beauty salon | Clinic |
| Works on | Skin surface | Skin surface, device-assisted | Deeper skin layers |
| Examples | Cleansing, masks, massage | Hydro Facial, Genosys protocols, organic peel | Needle-based treatments, laser, deep peels, fillers, botox |
| Goal | Cleansing and relaxation | Hydration, radiance, even tone, maintenance | Treating diagnosed conditions |
Classic Facials
A classic facial includes cleansing, steam, gentle exfoliation, a mask and massage. It aims to clear daily impurities, relax the skin and leave it looking fresher. It's a good starting point for sensitive skin.
Professional (Device-Assisted) Salon Facials
These go a step beyond classic facials, using professional products and devices such as vacuum-assisted tips — but they still work on the skin's surface and involve no needles. Examples at our salon:
- Hydro Facial: deep cleansing and hydration,
- Genosys Antiaging and SnowCell: protocols for fine lines and pigmentation,
- Acne care, organic peel and organic seaweed peel.

Medical Procedures: Why They Need a Doctor
Medical procedures break the skin barrier (needles, lasers, deep peeling) or inject substances into the skin. That brings risks such as infection, burns, pigmentation and scarring, so they require a medical assessment beforehand and a doctor's follow-up. For deep acne scars, stubborn melasma, pronounced wrinkles or skin diseases, a dermatologist is the right place to go.
Needle-based or skin-breaking procedures, deep peels, fillers and botox are not offered at our salon.
Which One When?
- Dullness, congested pores, dehydration: a professional salon facial is usually enough.
- Mild uneven tone, new sun spots: salon spot care plus sun protection — see our guide how to fade facial dark spots.
- Widespread inflamed acne, deep pitted scars, melasma, a mole or spot that changes shape: see a dermatologist first.
They are complementary, not alternatives. Someone under a doctor's treatment can also benefit from gentle salon facials with their doctor's approval.
Quick Tips by Skin Type
- Oily and acne-prone: non-comedogenic products and regular exfoliation.
- Dry: barrier-supporting moisturisers with ceramides and glycerin.
- Sensitive: few, simple products and patch-testing anything new.
