Men's Manicure: A Guide to Well-Groomed Hands
Contents
Short answer: A men's manicure is a simple treatment: nails are shortened and shaped, cuticles are cared for, hangnails are tidied and hands are moisturised. No coloured polish is used; if you like, the nail surface is buffed or a matte or clear protective coat is applied. The aim is not hands that look “done” but hands that look looked-after. For most men, a salon manicure once a month plus simple care at home is enough.
Why Do Men Get Manicures?
Hands are among the most visible parts of us all day, from handshakes and meetings to holding a phone or a fork. Lifted cuticles, hangnails, unevenly cut or broken nails and dry hands quietly affect how well-groomed someone looks. A manicure tidies these details and helps prevent the cuticle infections that habits like pulling hangnails can cause.
A Men's Manicure Step by Step
- Assessment: the condition of nails and cuticles is checked; if there is a fungal infection, an infection or painful swelling, we do not go ahead.
- Shortening and shaping: nails are cut down and usually given a round or soft square (squoval) shape.
- Softening: hands are soaked in warm water to soften the cuticles.
- Cuticle care: cuticles are gently pushed back and hangnails tidied. Healthy cuticles are not cut; unnecessary cutting raises the risk of infection.
- Surface and finish: if you like, nails are buffed or a matte or clear protective coat is applied.
- Moisturising: hands and cuticles are moisturised.
At our salon, nail tools are cleaned and sterilised after every client, and files and buffers are single-person items. We explain our approach on our hygiene and safety protocol page.
Which Shape and Finish?
| Choice | Best for |
|---|---|
| Short round | Busy hands, athletes, the most natural look |
| Short squoval (soft square) | A neater, more “tailored” look |
| Buffing | A light, healthy shine |
| Matte protective coat | Protection without shine |

Hand and Nail Care at Home
- Cut straight, file the corners: cutting very short and deep into the corners can cause ingrown nails, especially on the toes.
- Do not pull hangnails: biting or tearing them can cause wounds and infection; snip them off with clean nail scissors.
- Use hand cream: a fast-absorbing cream after washing, especially in winter, reduces dryness and cracking.
- Cuticle oil: a drop in the evening noticeably reduces hangnails.
- Gloves: wear them for gardening, DIY and cleaning to protect nails and hands.
Common Mistakes
- Biting nails or pulling hangnails,
- Cutting the cuticles away completely,
- Using nails as tools (opening boxes, scraping labels),
- Not moisturising after washing hands,
- Ignoring discolouration, thickening or pain in a nail. These can be signs of fungus or another problem; see a doctor.
If You Bite Your Nails
For many people, nail biting eases once regular manicures make the nails look cared for. If you want a short, natural-looking solution, a nail-biting prosthesis can also be an option.
Do Not Forget Your Feet
Poorly cut toenails and hard heels are very common in men. A pedicure, with your manicure or in a separate appointment, makes a real difference to comfort and appearance.
