How to Remove Acrylic Nails Safely
Contents
Short answer: nail extensions should never be ripped, pried or scraped off with metal tools. The right method is to thin the top layer in a controlled way without reaching the natural nail, soften it with a suitable solution and lift away what's left without force. Some hard gels don't dissolve in solution at all and can only be removed by careful filing. So, especially if you don't know which material was used, salon removal is the safest way to protect your nails.
Why Is Ripping Them Off at Home So Damaging?
Extensions bond firmly to the surface of the natural nail. When they're ripped off, the top layers of your nail come off with them. The usual result:
- Thin nails that bend like paper,
- White, rough, flaky patches,
- Sensitivity to hot and cold and easy breakage,
- Irritated cuticles and nail edges, sometimes with infection risk.
The damage only disappears as the nail grows out, which can take weeks or even months.
Removal Depends on the Material
| Material | How it's usually removed |
|---|---|
| Gel polish / shellac | Top coat thinned, softened with remover, gently lifted. |
| Acrylic | Length clipped, bulk filed down, softened in a suitable solution and lifted. |
| Soak-off gel | Thinned and softened, similar to acrylic. |
| Hard (builder) gel | Doesn't dissolve; filed down carefully without reaching the natural nail. |
| Polygel | Usually removed by careful, controlled filing. |

If You Have to Do It at Home
Leave removal to the salon if you can. In an emergency (for example, an extension has lifted and keeps catching):
- Don't rip: don't pull a lifting extension; just trim the catching tip with nail clippers.
- Don't pry: never lever it up from underneath with metal tools.
- Protect your skin: if you use remover, apply petroleum jelly around the nail and don't soak for too long; removers dry out the skin.
- Don't skip aftercare: apply cuticle oil and hand cream afterwards.
- Then come in: so the remaining product can be removed without harming the nail.
For gel polish specifically, see common mistakes in how to remove gel polish.
How Salon Removal Works
- Assessment: we check which material was used and whether there's lifting or cracking.
- Thinning the top layer: the extension is thinned in a controlled way so the solution can work, stopping before the natural nail.
- Softening: we wait for the product to soften in a suitable solution — a step that must not be skipped if the nail is to be protected.
- Gentle clean-up: softened product is lifted without force and remaining bits are removed without pressing on the nail.
- Care: the nail is lightly shaped and finished with cuticle oil and moisturiser.
We also remove extensions, gel and gel polish done at other salons. See our nail removal service page for details.
Nail Care After Removal
- Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day.
- Keep nails short and neat; weak nails suffer less damage when short.
- Wear gloves for washing-up and cleaning.
- If your nails have thinned, waiting a few weeks before a new set — or keeping up with a manicure in the meantime — is a good option.

When to See a Doctor
Redness, swelling, throbbing or pus around the nail, or yellowing, browning or a nail separating from its bed can be signs of infection or fungus. Ingrown nails and partial or full nail removal are medical procedures performed by a doctor and are not offered at our salon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
Can I remove acrylic nails at home?
Salon removal is recommended where possible. Ripping or scraping them off takes the top layers of your natural nail with them and thins it.
How long does extension removal take?
Gel polish removal is quick; removing extensions takes longer depending on the material and thickness.
Does every extension dissolve in remover?
No. Acrylic and soak-off gels can be softened; hard gel and polygel are usually removed by careful, controlled filing.
Do you remove extensions done at another salon?
Yes. We remove extensions, gel and gel polish wherever they were done.
How should I care for my nails after removal?
Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day, keep nails short and wear gloves for washing-up. If your nails have thinned, wait a few weeks before a new set.
