How to Remove Gel Polish: 5 Common At-Home Mistakes and the Right Way
Short answer: do not peel or scrape gel polish off. Lightly buff away the shine of the top coat, wrap the nail with acetone-soaked cotton and foil, wait 10–15 minutes, gently push the softened polish off with a wooden stick and moisturise afterwards. It is not gel polish itself that damages nails but the mistakes made while removing it.
Five Mistakes People Make at Home
- Peeling it off: pulling from a lifted edge takes the top layers of your own nail with it. Nails end up thin, patchy white and layered.
- Scraping with metal tools: metal pushers or scissor tips scratch and pit the nail when the polish has not softened.
- Over-filing with a coarse file: trying to file all the colour off thins your natural nail too. The goal is only to break the shine of the top coat.
- Not enough acetone time, or skipping the buffing: the glossy top coat blocks acetone. Polish that does not soften tempts you to scrape.
- Skipping aftercare: acetone dries out nails and cuticles. Without oil and cream, nails stay brittle.
The Right Way at Home, Step by Step
You will need: pure acetone, cotton pads, aluminium foil (or clip-on caps), a fine file or buffer, a wooden orange stick and cuticle oil.
- Lightly buff the shine off the top coat with a fine file; do not try to remove the colour.
- Protect cuticles and surrounding skin with a little oil.
- Place acetone-soaked cotton on the nail and wrap it tightly in foil.
- Wait 10–15 minutes; keeping your hands warm speeds things up.
- Remove the foil and gently push the lifted polish from the base towards the tip with the wooden stick. If a spot resists, do not force it; wrap it for another 5 minutes.
- Smooth any remaining traces very gently with a buffer.
- Wash your hands and apply cuticle oil and hand cream.
When to Go to a Salon Instead
- There is builder gel, polygel or an extension under the polish (these do not come off easily with acetone and need controlled filing),
- The polish has lifted, water has got underneath and there is discolouration,
- Your nails are very thin or broken,
- Your skin reacts to acetone.
In the salon, removal is done layer by layer without reaching your natural nail, followed by a care treatment.
How Often Should Gel Polish Be Redone?
Gel polish usually looks neat for 2–3 weeks. As the nail grows, a gap appears at the base and edges begin to lift. Moisture trapped under lifted polish can make the nail surface sensitive, so redoing or removing it before it goes much past three weeks is a good rule.
Helping Your Nails Recover
- Apply cuticle oil twice a day for a few days.
- Keep nails short and oval so the tips break less.
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- If your nails have thinned, use a strengthening treatment for a while.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
Can gel polish be removed without acetone?
Regular nail polish remover will not take it off. You need pure acetone and 10–15 minutes wrapped in foil; removing it without acetone usually leads to scraping and nail damage.
Why does gel polish make nails thin?
Thinning is mainly caused by peeling the polish, scraping with metal tools and over-filing. With proper removal your natural nail layers stay intact.
How often should gel polish be redone?
Usually every 2–3 weeks. Redo or remove it before it goes much past three weeks so moisture does not get trapped under lifted polish.
Can I remove it at home if there is gel or an extension underneath?
No. Builder gel, polygel and extensions do not come off easily with acetone and should be filed down layer by layer in the salon.
