Types of Nail Extensions: Gel, Acrylic, Polygel and Tips Explained
Short answer: there are four main ways to do nail extensions. Gel is flexible and natural-looking and cures under an LED/UV lamp. Acrylic is a powder-and-liquid mix that hardens in the air and is the most durable option. Polygel combines the flexibility of gel with the strength of acrylic and has no smell. Tips are pre-made ends glued to the nail and covered with gel or acrylic to add length fast. The right choice depends on the condition of your natural nails, the length you want and how you use your hands.
Nail Extensions vs Gel Polish
Gel polish is a thin layer of colour on your own nail; it does not add length or change shape. Extensions build a structure that lengthens, shapes and strengthens the nail. We explain the difference in detail in acrylic nails or gel polish?
1. Gel Nails
Gel has an adjustable consistency and is cured layer by layer under an LED/UV lamp. Its flexibility feels close to a natural nail, it stays glossy for a long time and it has no smell.
- Best for: a natural look, short-to-medium length, people sensitive to smells.
- Keep in mind: very long, pointed shapes may be less impact-resistant than acrylic.
2. Acrylic Nails
Acrylic is a mix of polymer powder and liquid monomer that hardens on contact with air. It is the hardest, most durable method and suits long, sculpted shapes.
- Best for: long nails and sharp shapes, heavy hand use, very brittle natural nails.
- Keep in mind: it has a noticeable smell during application and feels harder than gel.
3. Polygel
Polygel sits between acrylic and gel. It has a putty-like texture, does not run and cures under a lamp. It is nearly as strong as acrylic while feeling as light as gel, with no smell.
- Best for: durability without the acrylic smell, a lightweight feel.
- Keep in mind: it needs a specific technique and an experienced technician.
4. Tips
Tips are pre-made plastic ends glued to the edge of the nail. They are always covered with gel, acrylic or polygel. They add length quickly and shorten application time.
- Best for: long nails in a short appointment, very short natural nails.
- Keep in mind: if the join between tip and nail is not blended well, it can lift.

Which Extension Suits You?
- Thin nails that break easily: gel or polygel at short-to-medium length.
- Long, defined shapes (almond, stiletto): acrylic, or tips with acrylic.
- Heavy hand use (typing, cooking, sport): short-to-medium acrylic or polygel.
- Nail biting: a dedicated nail-biting extension is the right approach.
Infills and Aftercare
As your natural nail grows, a gap appears between the extension and the cuticle. It is usually closed with an infill every 3–4 weeks. If infills are delayed, the balance point moves forward and the nail is more likely to lift or break.
- Never pull off a lifted corner yourself; the top layer of your own nail comes with it.
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- Use cuticle oil every day.
- Do not remove extensions at home; have them taken off in the salon.
Do Extensions Damage Natural Nails?
With proper preparation, good products and careful removal, extensions do not cause lasting damage. The most common causes of damage are over-filing, pulling extensions off and putting off infills for months. Giving your nails a few weeks' break after removal also helps them recover.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
Which nail extension lasts the longest?
Acrylic is the hardest and most durable. Polygel comes close and has no smell; gel is more flexible and looks the most natural.
How often do extensions need an infill?
Usually every 3–4 weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow. Delaying infills makes lifting and breakage more likely.
Will extensions damage my natural nails?
Not with proper preparation and careful removal. Damage is usually caused by over-filing, pulling extensions off and skipping infills for months.
What is the difference between tips and gel nails?
Tips are pre-made plastic ends that add length fast; they are always covered with gel, acrylic or polygel. Gel is the material that builds the nail layer by layer.
