How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do You Need?
Contents
Short answer: most people need 6–8 laser hair removal sessions per area. Areas with coarse, dark hair such as the underarms and legs may finish at the lower end, while the face and hormone-sensitive areas can stretch to 8–10. Sessions are spaced 4 to 10 weeks apart depending on the area, so a full course usually takes between six months and a year.
Why Do You Need Several Sessions?
Hair goes through growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and rest (telogen), and each hair is at a different stage. Laser works best in the growth phase, when the follicle is attached to the hair. Each session targets the hairs growing at that moment; in the gap, a new group enters the growth phase. How fast an area's hair cycles sets the interval.
Session Plan by Area
| Area | Typical interval | Common number of sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip, chin, face | 4–6 weeks | 8–10 (touch-ups likely) |
| Men's beard line, nape | 4–6 weeks | 8–12 |
| Underarms | 5–7 weeks | 6–8 |
| Bikini and intimate area | 5–7 weeks | 6–8 |
| Arms, backs of hands | 6–8 weeks | 6–8 |
| Legs (lower / upper) | 6–8 weeks | 6–8 |
| Chest, stomach | 6–8 weeks | 6–8 |
| Back, shoulders, buttocks | 8–10 weeks | 6–10 |
These are common industry ranges. Your personal plan is set after a hair analysis and updated as sessions progress.
What Affects the Number of Sessions?
Hair colour and thickness
Dark, coarse hair absorbs laser better and responds faster. Fine, light hair may need more sessions; white and grey hair doesn't respond.
Skin tone
On olive and darker skin, the skin itself carries pigment, so energy is set more cautiously, which can add a few sessions. Deeper wavelengths such as 1064 nm make treatment safer on these skin tones.
Hormones
PCOS, thyroid issues and other hormonal conditions can activate new follicles, lengthening the course and increasing touch-ups. See laser hair removal for hirsutism and PCOS.
What you do between sessions
Waxing, tweezing or epilating pulls hair out by the root, leaving nothing for the laser to target next time. Only shave between sessions.
Keeping to intervals
Coming back too early wastes energy before new hairs are in the growth phase; leaving it too late lets some hairs complete their cycle untreated. If you miss a session, rebook as soon as you can; there's no need to start over.
What You'll Notice Over the Course
- Sessions 1–2: hair sheds 1–2 weeks after each session; skin stays smooth for a while, then a new group grows.
- Sessions 3–4: clear reduction in density, finer hair and longer gaps between shaves.
- Sessions 5–6 and beyond: sparse, fine hair; some areas are complete.
- After the course: one or two touch-ups a year if needed. More in is laser hair removal permanent?
How Many Months Does It Take?
A simple sum: 7 underarm sessions six weeks apart take about 9 months. 7 back sessions nine weeks apart take close to a year. If you want smooth skin for summer, starting in autumn or early winter is easier for both timing and sun protection.
Planning Several Areas Together
Areas with similar intervals (underarms and bikini, for example) can share an appointment. Areas with different intervals (face and back) will sometimes have separate visits. If you want several areas, a full body laser plan reduces the number of appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
How many laser sessions do I need?
Most people need 6–8 sessions per area. The face and hormone-sensitive areas can take 8–10.
How far apart are sessions?
It depends on the area: usually 4–6 weeks for the face, 5–7 for underarms and bikini, 6–8 for arms and legs, 8–10 for the back.
If I miss a session, do I start again?
No. Just rebook as soon as you can; there's no need to restart the course.
Can I wax between sessions?
No. Waxing and tweezing remove the hair from the root, leaving nothing for the laser to target. Only shave between sessions.
How long does a full course take?
Because of the intervals, a course usually takes between six months and a year.
Does darker skin need more sessions?
Energy is set more cautiously on darker skin, so a few more sessions may be needed; 1064 nm allows safer treatment on these skin tones.
