Face Yoga and Facial Massage: A 5-Minute At-Home Routine
Contents
Short answer: face yoga combines exercises for the face and neck muscles with massage moves that release tension. Done regularly, it can help the face look more rested and lively, ease tension in the jaw and forehead and help morning puffiness settle faster. It doesn't replace surgery or professional treatments, but a five-minute daily routine is an enjoyable, low-cost habit that complements your skincare.
What Face Yoga Does and Doesn't Do
| May support | Don't expect |
|---|---|
| Releasing muscle tension (especially jaw and forehead) | Deep wrinkles disappearing |
| Livelier circulation and a fresher complexion | Sagging skin tightening |
| Morning puffiness settling faster | A permanent "face-lift" effect |
| Awareness of frowning and jaw clenching during the day | Losing weight or double-chin fat |
Before You Start
- Wash your hands and face.
- Use a few drops of facial oil or serum so your fingers glide; don't drag dry skin.
- Use light pressure, generally working upwards and outwards.
- Avoid active breakouts, open wounds or irritated areas.
The 5-Minute Routine
1. Neck and lymph opening (45 seconds)
Place your fingertips just below your earlobes and glide them very lightly down the sides of your neck to your collarbone, 5–6 times. This first step makes it easier for fluid to drain from the face.
2. Jawline (1 minute)
Open your index and middle fingers in a V and glide along the jawbone from the chin to the ears. Then, while gently opening and closing your mouth, release the muscle in front of the jaw joint with small circles. Especially soothing if you clench your teeth.
3. Cheekbones (1 minute)
Place your palms beside your nose and slowly glide under the cheekbones towards the temples. Then lift your cheeks with a wide smile, hold for 5 seconds and release; repeat 5 times.
4. Eye area (45 seconds)
With your ring finger, pat from under the eye towards the outer corner and come back under the brow. Never pull or rub around the eyes; this is the thinnest skin on the face.
5. Forehead (45 seconds)
Place your fingers just above your brows and fan them out towards the hairline. For tension between the brows, press gently with both thumbs from the inner end of the brow outwards.
6. Finish (30 seconds)
Rub your palms together to warm them, rest them on your face for a few seconds, then glide down the neck three times.
Common Mistakes
- Too much pressure: releasing muscles doesn't need force; it causes redness and sensitivity.
- Exaggerated expressions: moves that repeatedly deepen the same line (like constant brow raising) can backfire.
- Massaging dry skin: drags and irritates.
- Inconsistency: a short daily routine beats one long weekly session.
Using Tools: Gua Sha and Face Rollers
A Gua Sha stone or face roller helps you apply more even pressure. Hold the stone almost flat against the skin and glide lightly over oil. A salon Gua Sha massage uses professional technique to release facial muscles more deeply and revive the skin, a good partner to your home routine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
Does face yoga work?
Done regularly it can help the face look more rested, ease jaw and forehead tension and help morning puffiness settle faster; it won't remove deep wrinkles.
How often should I do face yoga?
A short five-minute routine every day works better than one long weekly session.
Should I use oil for facial massage?
Yes. A few drops of facial oil or serum let your fingers glide; massaging dry skin drags it.
Can I massage around the eyes?
Only with light patting using your ring finger; never pull or rub the eye area.
How is Gua Sha different from face yoga?
Face yoga combines exercises and hand massage; Gua Sha uses a stone to apply even pressure. We also offer professional Gua Sha massage at the salon.
Who shouldn't do facial massage?
Avoid active breakouts, open wounds or irritated skin, and see a doctor first if you have jaw joint pain.
