What Is Nail Art? Professional Nail Design Techniques
Contents
Short answer: nail art is the umbrella term for any design that takes nails beyond a single colour: French tips, gradients (ombre, baby boomer), patterns, shimmering and metallic effects, or stones and embellishments. It's usually done on a gel polish or nail extension base so the design lasts for weeks. The right base, healthy nails and a design that fits your daily life decide how good it looks and how long it lasts.
Which Base Is Nail Art Done On?
| Base | Advantage | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gel polish | Thin and natural, at your own nail length | Strong nails with some length |
| Nail extensions (gel, acrylic, polygel) | Length and shape; a bigger canvas for design | Short or weak nails, or a defined shape |
| Regular polish | Temporary and quick | One-off events |
We compare extension types in types of nail extensions and explain gel nails in what are gel nails.
A Nail Art Glossary
French manicure
A white tip line on a nude or pink base. Classic and suits any setting; modern takes include coloured tips, micro lines and V-shaped tips.
Baby boomer (ombre French)
A soft fade from white tip to nude base: a more natural, line-free French.
Ombre
Two or more colours blending into each other, on one nail or across the hand.
Foil
Thin metallic foil transferred onto the nail for gold, silver or patterned shimmer.
Chrome and pearl effects
Fine powder pigments rubbed onto the top coat for a mirror-like metallic or pearly finish.
Cat eye
Magnetic gels create a deep line of shine that moves with the light.
Marble and hand-painted designs
Marble veins, flowers, geometric lines or dots painted by brush.
3D and embellished designs
Stones, pearl details or raised gel patterns. Eye-catching but more likely to catch on things, so usually kept to one or two nails.
At our salon we do nude, French, baby boomer, single-colour and embellished designs. If you have a more specific technique in mind, send us a photo before your appointment so we can confirm whether it's possible and how long it will take.
Choosing the Right Design
- Your routine: if you type a lot, play sport or have your hands in water often, shorter shapes and flat designs last longer.
- Shape: almond and oval lengthen the look; square and ballerina give more space for patterns.
- Skin tone: gold foil and earthy shades often suit warm undertones; silver and pastels suit cool undertones.
- Time: a single-colour gel manicure usually takes 45–60 minutes; French, ombre and designs take longer depending on detail.
- Bring a photo: it's the easiest way to agree on expectations.
How Long Does Nail Art Last?
Designs on gel polish usually last 2–4 weeks on fingernails. On extensions, the design is refreshed at the infill appointment every 3–4 weeks. Raised embellishments may wear sooner than flat designs.
Protecting Nail Health
- Never peel or scrape designs off; have them removed at the salon. See how to remove gel polish.
- Use cuticle oil every day.
- If there are signs of fungus, inflammation or lifting, we don't apply anything; see a dermatologist first.
