What Are Gel Nails? Who They Suit and How Long They Last
Short answer: gel nails are extensions built with a gel that cures under an LED/UV lamp, either over your natural nail or forward on a form or tip. They are flexible, natural-looking, odourless and stay glossy for a long time. With proper application and care they last 3–4 weeks, until the next infill. They are a good option if your nails are thin and break easily and you want a natural length.
How Are Gel Nails Applied?
- Prep: cuticles are pushed back, the nail surface is lightly buffed to remove shine and cleansed of oil.
- Base: a bonder and base coat are applied and cured.
- Length: a paper form goes under the nail, or a tip is glued on.
- Build: gel is applied in layers and the apex (the highest point) is shaped for strength.
- Shape and colour: the nail is filed to shape; colour gel, French or nail art is added.
- Top coat: finished with a glossy or matte top coat and cuticle oil.
Depending on length and design, an appointment usually takes 1.5–2.5 hours.

Who Are Gel Nails For?
- Nails that are thin, peel in layers or break often,
- A natural-looking short-to-medium length,
- People sensitive to the smell of acrylic,
- Gel polish that lifts quickly or cracks at the tips.
Who should skip them?
- Anyone with fungal infection, infection or an open wound on the nail (see a doctor first),
- People with a known allergy to gel or acrylate products,
- Very long, pointed styles combined with heavy hand use (acrylic is stronger there).
How Long Do Gel Nails Last?
The gel itself can last for months; the limit is your natural nail growing out. As it grows, a gap appears at the base and the balance point moves forward. That is why an infill is done every 3–4 weeks: the gap is filled, the apex rebuilt and the colour refreshed.
The main things that shorten their life are using nails as tools (opening cans, scraping labels), cleaning without gloves, pulling lifted corners and delaying infills.
Seven Habits That Make Gel Nails Last
- Avoid very hot water and saunas for the first 24 hours.
- Wear gloves for washing up, cleaning and painting.
- Apply cuticle oil every evening to keep them flexible.
- Never use your nails as scrapers or openers.
- If you see lifting, do not pull it; bring your infill forward.
- Keep acetone-based cleaners off the gel.
- Book your infill date at the first appointment.
How Are Gel Nails Removed?
Never cut, file or prise gel nails off at home. In the salon the gel is thinned down in a controlled way and removed without damaging your natural nail, followed by a care treatment.
Are Gel Nails Bad for Your Nails?
With proper prep, good products and careful removal, gel nails do not cause lasting damage. The key point during application is keeping gel off the skin; repeated skin contact can lead to sensitivity and allergy over time. Lamp curing times should also follow the product instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
How long do gel nails last?
The gel itself can last for months; the limit is your natural nail growing out, so an infill is done every 3–4 weeks.
What is the difference between gel nails and gel polish?
Gel polish colours your own nail with a thin layer. Gel nails lengthen, strengthen and shape the nail.
Can I remove gel nails at home?
It is not recommended. Cutting, filing or pulling them off damages the top layer of your natural nail; they should be removed in the salon.
Can gel nails cause an allergy?
Repeated skin contact with gel can cause sensitivity in some people. With correct application gel does not touch the skin; if redness or itching appears, stop and see a doctor.
