Gel Polish for Broken Nails: Repair Without Cutting Them Short

Short answer: if a nail cracks or breaks but the nail bed is not injured, it can usually be repaired with a thin layer of repair gel and then finished with gel polish so it matches the others, so you don't have to cut all ten nails short. If the break goes into the nail bed, bleeds, hurts or looks infected, repair waits until it has healed.
Which Breaks Can Be Repaired?
- A crack at the tip or side that hasn't reached the pink part of the nail: usually easy to reinforce.
- A small missing corner: can often be rebuilt to match the shape of your other nails.
- A split that reaches the nail bed, with bleeding or pain: not suitable for repair until it heals.
How the Repair Works
- Assessment: we check how deep the break goes and whether the nail and skin around it are healthy.
- Preparation: the surface is cleaned and lightly prepared so the repair material bonds well.
- Repair layer: a thin layer of repair gel bridges the crack; if a small piece is missing, it is rebuilt along the natural curve of the nail.
- Shape and colour: the nail is shaped to match the others and finished with gel polish and a top coat.

How Long Does It Last?
A repaired nail under gel polish usually lasts until your next appointment, typically around three weeks depending on how fast your nails grow. As the nail grows, the repaired part moves towards the tip and is eventually filed away.
Aftercare for a Repaired Nail
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- Use cuticle oil every evening to keep the nail flexible.
- Don't use the repaired nail to open cans or scratch labels.
- If the repair lifts, don't pull it; book a quick fix.

When Repair Isn't the Right Choice
Bleeding under the nail, an open wound, swelling, signs of fungal infection or a nail lifting away from its bed are reasons to see a dermatologist, not to cover the nail with gel. We will happily postpone your appointment in that case.
