Four Weeks to New Year's Eve: Skin, Nails and Laser Prep Plan
Contents
Short answer: with New Year's Eve beauty prep, order is everything. Put anything that might leave temporary redness, such as laser hair removal or an intensive facial, in the first two weeks; hydrating, glow-focused care in week three; and gel polish or nail extensions in the final week. Don't try anything new in the last three days.
Late December is the busiest time of year for salons. Booking at the end of November or in the first week of December makes it much easier to get the day and time you want. The plan below counts back from New Year's Eve as “day 0”.
The Plan at a Glance
| When | Skin | Laser | Nails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 4 (28–22 days to go) | Skin assessment, first facial | Session if one is due | Cuticle care, short shape |
| Week 3 (21–15 days) | Home routine settles, less exfoliation | Latest sensible time for a last session | Moisturise, break from polish |
| Week 2 (14–8 days) | Glow and hydration | No session, shave only | Choose design and colour |
| Final week (7–1 days) | No new products, water and sleep | Razor only | Gel polish / extensions |
Week 4: Assess and Plan
- Skin: if winter has brought dryness, clogged pores or dullness, having your first professional facial now gives skin time to settle. Hydro Facial is a popular choice for dull, dry-looking skin; it takes about an hour and you can go straight back to your day.
- Laser: if you are already having laser hair removal and a session falls this week, keep it. Redness usually settles quickly, but leaving a few weeks before New Year's Eve is the most relaxed option. See how it feels in our laser pain map.
- Nails: if your nails are tired from gel, keep them short and neat this week and focus on cuticle care.
Week 3: Build the Routine
- At home: a gentle cleanser, a barrier-friendly moisturiser and daytime sunscreen. Cut harsh exfoliation down to once a week.
- Laser: this is the latest sensible week for a final session before the holidays. If you are just starting, don't rush: laser hair removal takes months, not weeks. Book a free hair analysis and patch test to see your plan and spread sessions into the new year.
- Nails: cuticle oil and hand cream every evening. If you wear gel, our gel polish aftercare guide is useful this week.
Week 2: Glow and Decisions
- Skin: a good week for a hydrating, glow-focused facial. If you're battling blackheads, don't squeeze; here's why.
- Laser: no session. Shave only; waxing and plucking interfere with laser.
- Nails: decide on your outfit and colour, and confirm your final-week appointment. Sparkle, chrome or classic red; if you want length, gel or acrylic extensions are an option. Compare them in what are gel nails?
Final Week: Finishing Touches
- Gel polish or extensions (2–4 days before): fresh, glossy nails with no visible regrowth. See our gel polish and nail extensions pages.
- No new products: a mask, serum or peel you've never used can cause surprise redness.
- Shave timing: shave the day before, not the night of, so sensitive skin can calm down.
- Salt and alcohol: during a week of parties, plenty of water and fewer salty snacks can reduce puffiness. Read how to reduce water retention.
- Sleep: no product replaces two good nights' sleep.
On the Night and After
A light moisturiser and a good primer under makeup are enough. However tired you are when you get home, take your makeup off; sleeping in it clogs pores and makes skin look tired on New Year's Day. In January you can pick up your laser sessions and regular facials where you left off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
When should my last laser session be before New Year's Eve?
To leave time for any redness, plan your last session about two to three weeks before. In the final days, shave only.
Is it worth starting laser four weeks before New Year?
You can start, but laser takes months, not weeks. Get a free hair analysis to see your plan and spread sessions into the new year.
How many days before New Year's Eve should I get gel polish?
Two to four days before is ideal: fresh, glossy nails with no visible regrowth.
When should I book a facial before New Year?
Book a more intensive facial two to four weeks before and a hydrating, glow-focused one no later than a week before. Avoid anything new in the last few days.
Can I do a peel in the final week?
It's not recommended. A new or strong peel can cause redness and sensitivity. In the last week, hydration and sleep make more difference.
