Short answer: pushing a laser session back by a week or two usually doesn't affect your results; it just makes the course a little longer. If the gap stretches into months, new hairs move into the growth phase in the meantime and you may need one extra session. Squeezing two sessions close together to “catch up” doesn't help; simply carry on with your normal interval from the next available date.
Why Laser Is Done in Sessions
Hair doesn't all grow at once. Each hair cycles through a growth phase (anagen), a transition phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen). Laser works through the pigment in the hair, so it mostly affects hairs that are actively growing. Each session only reaches the hairs that are active at that moment; resting hairs wait for the next one. The interval between sessions is the time those resting hairs need to move into the growth phase.
Typical Intervals by Body Area
The gap depends on the hair cycle of each area. These are common industry averages; your own plan is adjusted to your hair density and progress.
| Area | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| Face (upper lip, chin, between the brows) | About 4–6 weeks |
| Underarms, bikini and intimate area | About 6–8 weeks |
| Arms, legs | About 8–10 weeks |
| Back, chest | About 8–12 weeks |
| Men's beard line | About 4–6 weeks |
As hair thins out in later sessions, intervals are usually stretched.
What Happens If I Miss a Session? Three Scenarios
1. A delay of one or two weeks
The most common situation, and usually not a problem. Some hairs will be a little longer, which a shave before the session takes care of. Your plan continues as before.
2. A delay of one or two months
New hairs move into the growth phase during the gap, so the area may look denser than after your last session. That doesn't mean the earlier sessions were wasted; follicles that were weakened stay weakened. You may, however, need one extra session in total.
3. A break of several months or more
Pregnancy, long travel or a summer tan can mean a long break. When you come back, a short reassessment of hair density, skin tone and settings helps us update the plan. You won't start from zero, but an accurate picture of where you are matters.
Should I Book Sessions Closer Together to Catch Up?
No. Sessions closer than recommended can't reach hairs that haven't entered the growth phase yet, so they add little benefit and only put more stress on the skin. Carry on at the normal interval from the first available date.
Dos and Don'ts Between Sessions
- Do: remove hair only by shaving or trimming.
- Don't: wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator. Pulling hair out by the root removes exactly what the laser needs to target.
- Watch the sun: laser is usually postponed on tanned skin. If you've tanned during a long break, tell us before your session.
- Medication changes: let us know if you've started any medicine that can make skin sensitive to light.

Practical Tips to Stay on Schedule
- Book your next appointment as you leave: open-ended dates are easier to put off.
- Set reminders: one a week before and one the day before.
- Plan around holidays: if a sunny trip is coming up, schedule sessions before and after it.
- Choose a time that fits your routine: after work or at lunchtime.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Around 6–8 sessions is common for most areas; hormones, hair density and how regular your sessions are can change that. Curious how it feels? See our laser pain map, or compare options in at-home devices vs professional diode laser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
How many weeks apart should laser sessions be?
It depends on the area: about 4–6 weeks on the face, 6–8 for underarms and bikini, 8–10 for arms and legs and 8–12 for the back and chest are common intervals.
If I miss a session, do I lose my progress?
No. Follicles weakened in earlier sessions stay weakened. A delay of a week or two usually doesn't affect results; a gap of months may mean one extra session.
Can I book sessions closer together to catch up?
It's not recommended. Hairs that aren't in the growth phase can't be targeted, so extra-close sessions add little and stress the skin. Continue at your normal interval.
Can I wax between laser sessions?
No. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilators pull out the hair the laser needs to target. Shave only between sessions.
Do I have to start again after a long break?
No. Hair density, skin tone and settings are reassessed and your plan is updated from where you are.
Can I continue a course I started at another salon?
Yes. A free hair analysis and patch test lets us assess where you are and build a plan for the rest of your course.
