Short answer: Before laser hair removal, shave the area 12–24 hours beforehand, stop waxing and tweezing at least 3–4 weeks before, and stay out of strong sun for two weeks. For the first 24 hours afterwards, avoid hot showers, saunas, hammams, pools and intense exercise; a short lukewarm shower is usually fine the next day. Keep the area moisturised, protect it from the sun and do not pull out hairs that shed within 1–3 weeks.

Before Laser: The Weeks Leading Up

4 weeks before

  • Stop waxing, tweezing and epilating. Laser targets the pigment in the root; methods that pull out the root remove the laser's target. For a full transition guide, see switching from waxing to laser.

2 weeks before

  • Avoid strong sun, sunbeds and self-tan. Tanned skin limits the settings and raises the risk of pigmentation; your session may be postponed.
  • If you take medication that can cause light sensitivity (such as some antibiotics or acne medication), tell us before your appointment and check with your doctor if needed.

A few days before

  • Stop using exfoliants, acids or retinoids on the treatment area.
  • Keep your skin moisturised; dry, irritated skin is more sensitive.

Shaving Before Laser: When and How?

This is one of the most common questions. The right time is 12–24 hours before your session, so the hair is barely visible at the surface while the root stays in place. Shaving on the morning of the session is also possible, but freshly shaved, irritated skin can feel more sensitive for some people.

  • Use a clean, sharp razor with shaving foam or gel, in the direction of hair growth.
  • Do not use depilatory cream; it can sensitise the skin.
  • For areas you cannot reach (such as the back), let us know when booking.

On the Day

  • Come without cream, perfume, deodorant or make-up on the treatment area.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Tell us about any areas you feel are sensitive and any medication you have taken in recent weeks.

What to Do After Laser Hair Removal

WhenDoDon't
First 24 hoursKeep the area cool, apply a moisturiser or soothing cream, wear loose clothingHot showers, saunas, hammams, pools, intense exercise, alcohol-based or scented products
Days 2–7Lukewarm showers, regular moisturising, sunscreenExfoliating, scrubbing mitts, waxing, tweezing, sunbeds
Weeks 1–3Leave shedding hairs alone; once any sensitivity has passed, wash gently with a soft mittPulling hairs out
Until your next sessionShaving only, sun protectionWaxing, tweezing, epilating, tanning

Showering After Laser: When and How?

Showering after a session is not forbidden; what matters is water temperature and timing. The general advice:

  • First 24 hours: avoid hot showers, long baths, saunas and hammams. A short lukewarm-to-cool shower is fine if needed.
  • After 24 hours: you can shower normally with lukewarm water. Do not scrub the area; use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and pat dry with a towel.
  • Pools and the sea: chlorine and salt can irritate sensitive skin; it is better to avoid them for the first few days.

Exercise, Deodorant and Make-Up

  • Exercise: sweat and friction can irritate sensitive skin; postpone intense workouts for 24–48 hours.
  • Deodorant: after an underarm session, avoid alcohol-based or scented deodorant for the first 24 hours.
  • Make-up: after a facial session, avoid heavy make-up until the skin settles, usually about a day.

What Is Normal and When to Tell Us

Normal: mild redness lasting a few hours to a day or two, a warm feeling, small bumps around the follicles, and hair shedding within 1–3 weeks. We explain the shedding phase in shedding after laser hair removal.

Tell us: marked redness or swelling lasting more than a few days, blistering, crusting or colour changes. In these cases we may recommend seeing a doctor.

Small Differences by Skin Type

  • Dry and sensitive skin: moisturising after the session matters even more; choose fragrance-free, soothing products.
  • Darker skin: sun protection and correct settings are key to reducing the risk of pigmentation, which is why the patch test matters.
  • Breakout-prone skin: choose light, non-comedogenic moisturisers over heavy, oily creams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content

How long before laser should I shave?

Ideally 12–24 hours before your session, with a razor. Do not wax, tweeze or use depilatory cream.

When can I shower after laser hair removal?

Avoid hot showers and long baths for the first 24 hours; a short lukewarm-to-cool shower is fine if needed. After 24 hours you can shower normally with lukewarm water.

What should I do after laser?

Keep the area cool and moisturised, protect it from the sun, and avoid saunas, hammams, pools and intense exercise for 24 hours. Only shave between sessions.

Is redness after laser normal?

Yes, mild redness and small bumps around the follicles usually settle within a few hours to a day or two. Let us know if it lasts longer.

Can I exercise after laser?

Sweat and friction can irritate sensitive skin, so we recommend postponing intense exercise for 24–48 hours.

Can I go in the sun after laser?

You can, but protect the area with high-SPF sunscreen. Tanning between sessions may mean your next session has to be postponed.
