Short answer: gel polish on its own does not “burn” or “rot” your nails. What really wears them down is peeling the polish off, scraping it away too hard, leaving the cuticles dry and wearing gel back to back with no aftercare. Professional removal, cuticle oil every evening, gloves for cleaning and never using your nails as tools are the four basics of gel polish aftercare.

Why Do Nails Weaken After Gel Polish?

The nail plate is made of thin layers of keratin stacked on top of each other. Gel polish sits on that surface as a base, a colour and a top coat that cure under UV/LED light. The trouble usually comes afterwards:

  • Peeling it off: pulling gel from a lifted corner takes the top keratin layers with it. White, flaky patches are usually the sign.
  • Heavy filing: over-buffing the surface during removal thins the nail, which then feels sensitive to heat and cold.
  • Loss of moisture: acetone and household cleaners dry out both the nail and the cuticle; a dry nail loses flexibility and snaps easily.
  • Winter and frequent hand washing: cold air and constant washing mean more cracked cuticles and hangnails.

What Is Shellac, and Is It Different from Gel Polish?

Shellac is actually the name of one brand's gel polish system, and over time it became everyday shorthand for long-lasting polish. In Turkey, when people say “shellac” they almost always mean gel polish. Technically both are light-cured, gel-based polishes with very similar wear, shine and removal, so all the aftercare below applies to both. For more, read our Shellac gel manicure article.

Daily Care While You Wear Gel

  1. Cuticle oil every evening: massage a drop into the cuticle and along the edge of the polish. It reduces lifting and hangnails.
  2. Hand cream on the nails too: work it around the nail, not just into your palms.
  3. Wear gloves: washing-up liquid, bleach and surface cleaners dull the polish and dry the cuticle.
  4. Don't use nails as tools: opening cans, scraping labels or prising open key rings lifts gel at the tip.
  5. Leave lifted corners alone: instead of pulling, seal it with a clear coat and wait for your next appointment.

Safe Removal: the Step That Decides Everything

Most of the damage linked to gel polish happens during removal. Done properly, the top coat is lightly roughened, the gel is softened with a suitable solution and lifted off without harming the nail surface. Scraping with a metal tool or peeling at home can leave nails thin and sensitive for weeks. We go through the most common at-home mistakes in how to remove gel polish.

Strengthening Nails After Gel

If your nails look thin or uneven once the gel is off, don't panic: the nail keeps growing, and the damaged part is trimmed away as it grows out. In the meantime:

  • Keep them short: long, thin nails break more easily. A short round or oval shape is the most resilient.
  • Moisturise consistently: cuticle oil and hand cream help the keratin layers stay flexible.
  • Strengthening base: if you don't want a break from gel, a strengthening base and thin layers are a good option.
  • Look at your diet: enough protein, iron and biotin matter for nail health. Talk to your doctor before taking supplements.
  • Professional manicure: cuticle care and the right shape mean a thin nail catches and tears less often. See how a session works on our manicure page.

Do Nails Need a Break from Gel?

Nails don't “breathe”; they get nutrients and moisture from the nail bed and the cuticle. Still, if removal has thinned them, a few weeks off gives the damaged part time to grow out. If you'd rather not take a break, that's fine too: with gentle removal and regular care, gel can be reapplied straight away. If your nails are very short or break easily, our guide acrylic nails or gel polish? can help you decide.

What If a Nail Cracks Under Gel?

Don't tear it off. File the tip smooth and bring your appointment forward. If the crack doesn't reach the nail bed, it can often be repaired without cutting the nail short; read more in gel polish for broken nails.

When to See a Specialist

Greenish or brown discolouration, thickening, a nail lifting from its bed, redness, swelling or pain all mean you should see a dermatologist before any new application. These are matters for a doctor, not a beauty treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content

Why do nails get thin after gel polish?

Mostly because the gel was peeled or scraped off and the nails were left dry. Peeling pulls away the top keratin layers; professional removal and daily cuticle oil greatly reduce the risk.

How do I strengthen my nails after gel?

Keep them short, use cuticle oil and hand cream every evening and wear gloves for cleaning. The damaged part grows out over time; a strengthening base and regular manicures help in between.

What is Shellac?

Shellac is one brand's light-cured gel polish system. In everyday language it means the same as gel polish, and the aftercare and removal rules are the same.

Do I need a break from gel polish?

Nails don't breathe, so a break isn't essential. If removal has thinned them, though, a few weeks off lets the damaged part grow out.

Can I remove gel polish at home?

You can, but it's risky. Peeling or scraping with a metal tool thins the nail. The safest way is to have it softened with a suitable solution and removed in the salon.

Can I get gel polish if my nail is discoloured?

If you notice greenish or brown discolouration, thickening, lifting or pain, see a dermatologist first. These signs need a doctor's assessment, not a beauty treatment.
