Male vs Female Genital Laser Hair Removal: 2027 Guide
Contents
Genital laser hair removal is one of the treatments both women and men ask about most. The technology is the same, but anatomy, hair type and hormones change the plan considerably. This guide compares male and female genital laser hair removal – from treatment area and number of sessions to how it feels and how to prepare. For the overall process, see our genital laser hair removal guide.

Treatment Area and Anatomy
For women, treatment usually covers the bikini line and the full intimate area; how much is cleared is a personal choice. For men, the groin, the base of the penis and the scrotum are included. Male skin in this area is more folded and loose, so stretching the skin and keeping the handpiece in full contact needs extra care. Either way, the goal is to cover every surface evenly for a uniform result. Service details: female genital laser hair removal and male genital laser hair removal.
Hair Type and Hormones
Under the influence of androgens, men's genital hair is usually coarser, darker and deeper-rooted. Dark, coarse hair responds well to laser, but higher density can make the first sessions feel stronger and raises the total number of sessions. In women, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause can all affect hair growth. If hair growth is unusual or increasing quickly (for example with suspected PCOS), a doctor's assessment before laser is recommended.
Device and Settings
The device is chosen by skin tone and hair type rather than gender. We use a diode ice laser that combines 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm in one handpiece. Skin in the intimate area can be darker than the surrounding skin, and the 1064 nm wavelength allows safer settings there; for men's coarse hair, the 940 and 1064 nm wavelengths are used. Settings are decided after a free hair analysis and patch test.
How Does It Feel?
The intimate area is one of the most sensitive parts of the body. Sapphire contact cooling noticeably reduces the sensation; most people describe a brief prick and warmth. Men may feel the first sessions more because of hair density, while for women skin is more sensitive just before and during a period, so booking outside those days is more comfortable. For an area-by-area comparison, see our laser pain map.
Preparation and Aftercare
- Everyone: shave the area with a razor 12–24 hours before; don't wax, pluck or use an epilator.
- Men: scrotal skin is thin and loose, so shave slowly and carefully; a cut may mean postponing the session.
- Women: book outside your period.
- Afterwards: avoid hot showers, pools, saunas and hammams for 24–48 hours, and tight clothing and intense exercise for 1–2 days.
- Temporary redness and mild warmth are normal and usually settle quickly.
When to Postpone
Pregnancy, an active infection, open wound or new skin problem in the area, light-sensitising medication and recently tanned skin can all mean postponing laser. In these cases, please check with your doctor first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this content
What are the main differences between male and female genital laser hair removal?
The treatment area, hair density and hormones differ. These affect session length, the total number of sessions and device settings.
How many sessions do men need for genital laser?
Men usually need 8–10 sessions or more; 6–8 is a common range for women. Hair density and hormones decide the exact number.
Is genital laser more painful for men?
Pain tolerance is personal. Men's denser hair can make the first sessions feel stronger; sapphire contact cooling improves comfort.
Can women have genital laser during their period?
Skin is more sensitive just before and during a period, so we recommend booking outside those days.
How should I prepare for a session?
Shave the area with a razor 12–24 hours before; don't wax or pluck. For men, scrotal skin is thin, so shave slowly and carefully.
What should I avoid after genital laser?
Avoid hot showers, pools, saunas and hammams for 24–48 hours, and tight clothing and intense exercise for 1–2 days.
