Redness, Itching or Bumps After Laser: What's Normal?
Contents
Short answer: after laser hair removal, mild redness, small bumps around the hair follicles, warmth and slight itching are usually normal and settle on their own within a few hours to two or three days. Blisters, crusting, increasing pain, inflamed spots or changes in skin colour are not normal; if you notice them, call the salon and see a doctor if needed.
Why Does Redness Happen?
Laser energy turns into heat in the hair root. That heat causes a short-lived reaction in the surrounding tissue: small "goosebump" bumps around the follicles (perifollicular oedema) and redness around them. This is often a sign that the laser has reached its target. On areas with dense, coarse hair — especially in the first sessions — the reaction can be more noticeable.
Normal or Not? Symptom Table
| Symptom | Usually | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mild redness and warmth | Normal; settles within a few hours to 2 days | Cool compress, moisturiser |
| Small bumps around the follicles | Normal; goes down in 1–2 days | Don't scratch, avoid heat |
| Slight itching | Normal; can last a few days | Fragrance-free moisturiser, no scratching |
| Hairs shedding within 1–3 weeks | Normal; can look like hairs are "growing" | Don't pluck; let them fall out |
| A few small whiteheads | Can happen occasionally | Don't squeeze, keep clean; call us if they increase |
| Blisters, weeping, crusting | Not normal | Call the salon; see a doctor if needed |
| Increasing pain, swelling, heat, inflamed spots | Not normal | See a doctor |
| Darker or lighter patches | Not normal | Call the salon, protect from sun |
| Marked redness lasting over 3 days | Not normal | Call the salon |
Why Do Bumps or Spots Appear After Laser?
After laser, the follicles are briefly sensitive. Sweat, tight clothing, heavy creams or a dirty towel can trigger small spot-like bumps around the follicles during this time. Most settle on their own. If they multiply, hurt or become inflamed, let us know.
Tips for the First 48 Hours
- Cool down: apply a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for a few minutes; never put ice directly on the skin.
- Moisturise: use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser or aloe vera gel.
- Avoid heat: no hot showers, saunas, hammams or intense exercise for 24 hours.
- Protect from sun: if the area is exposed, apply high-SPF sunscreen.
- Don't irritate: no scratching, scrubs or alcohol-based products; skip underarm deodorant for a day.
- Dress loosely: choose comfortable clothes that reduce friction.
For the full before-and-after rules, see laser hair removal before and after.
Reducing the Risk Before Your Session
- Avoid strong sun and sunbeds for at least two weeks before each session.
- Tell us about your medication; some make skin light-sensitive. See laser hair removal and medications.
- Point out moles, tattoos and permanent makeup; we explain how they're protected in moles, tattoos and permanent makeup.
At our salon, every first session is preceded by a free hair analysis and patch test, so the skin's reaction is seen on a small area and settings are set accordingly.
